Daylight saving ends at 3:00 am on the 5th April 2026.
In New Zealand, two pieces of legislation govern daylight saving dates and the rules that apply when employees are working during the clock change:
• Time Act.
• NZ Daylight Time Order.
So what happens if you are working when the clocks change?
Working when daylight saving time begins or ends
Early Sunday morning was chosen for the changeover because fewer people are working then, reducing the impact on both workers and employers.
If you work when daylight saving time begins, and the clocks go forward, you actually work one hour less, but you are still entitled to be paid for your normal hours. For example, if you were scheduled to work from midnight to 8:00 am, you would only work 7 hours but must be paid for 8 hours.
If you work when daylight saving time ends and the clocks go back one hour, you are entitled to be paid for any extra hours worked. So, if you were scheduled to work from midnight to 8:00 am but actually worked 9 hours, you must be paid for 9 hours.
